New Christ Church Pupils Prove Energy Saving is a Hot Topic
Tuesday 16th November 2010
HeatSeekers paid pupils at New Christ Church School in Reading a visit on Monday (15th November) to see if they were radiating with heat as well as enthusiasm, as they learned about energy efficiency.
During a school energy workshop run by Reading Borough Council and its partnering energy-saving company, HeatSeekers, the pupils used a thermal imaging camera to take images of themselves and the school building to see how they could conserve heat.
Running around the playground and then putting coats on, the children learnt how adding insulation can reduce heat loss, and then learnt about applying the same principal to the school.
Headteacher, Maria Soulsby explained that the children were keen to learn how they could save energy: “We have been working with Reading Borough Council to increase the energy efficiency of the school. Fitting in well with our current aim to achieve Eco School status, the children will be keen to apply the lessons learnt from HeatSeekers to reduce our own energy loss.”
Becoming energy experts themselves, the children will now be tasked with teaching their parents about the savings they could make home.
The joint programme organised by Reading Borough Council will provide parents of the school with the opportunity to install loft and cavity wall insulation at a subsidised price, saving them approximately £300 a year on energy bills.
